Did you know Neighbour Day is held annually on the third Saturday of June? In past years, Calgarians have celebrated in the form of front yard BBQs, community cleanups, picnics, garden parties and potlucks.

“At its core, Neighbour Day is about celebrating the strength and resilience of our community. Every time we come together—whether to build something for everyone or enjoy the company of neighbours and new friends – we’re making our communities even stronger. It can be as simple as having tea in the common area of your apartment building, or as large as a community-wide games day in one of our many amazing parks.” – Mayor Naheed Nenshi

While the deadline to apply for an official Neighbour Day event permit from the City of Calgary has passed, there are still plenty of informal activities you can organize to engage with your community!

Host a BBQ

How about hosting your neighbours for a barbecue and campfire? If you could use some help on the grilling side of things, visit our recent blog post with tips on summer entertaining.

Planting Party

For those with green thumbs, a community planting party might be a suitable idea. If you have enough space in your yard, why not invite your fellow gardeners (young and old) in the community? When harvest time rolls around in the fall, you can treat them with the fruits of your labour in the form of herbs and veggies as a token of appreciation for their help. Another option is to organize an event at a community garden, where everyone can access a plot of soil.

Game On!

How about some friendly competition? Try organizing a community game of street hockey or pickleball!

Do Good in Your Neighbourhood

Helping others is always in style. If you’re feeling like doing good in your neighbourhood, you can organize a group volunteer day. There are many organizations in Calgary that can accommodate large groups, like seniors’ residences, homeless shelters and other charities. If you’d rather stick close to home, you can rally up a cleanup crew to help rid litter in common spaces such as parks and playgrounds.
