For many homeowners, spring marks the beginning of gardening season! Maintaining a garden requires a lot of care, with the hotter temperatures requiring more consistent watering. One small garden patch (think the size of a standard parking space) typically requires at minimum 25 litres of water per week, an approximate equivalent of 3 full loads of laundry or 52 flushes of a standard toilet. This water requirement almost doubles when your growing vegetables. Here are some practical tips to conserve water this year while still maintaining the garden of your dreams:
Use a Rain Barrel:
A rain barrel is a convenient choice for water supply. Not only are rain barrel’s a great way to conserve water, but this is also a great way to save money on water bills. Your plants will love this choice, too, as rainwater doesn’t contain the chemicals found in tap water. This also helps with storm management, helping to keep municipal storm drains clear and capture rooftop runoff.
Choose Drip Irrigation over a Traditional Sprinkler:
It’s easy to lose track of time when using a sprinkler, which can put out 15-20 litres per minute of water! Choose a drip irrigation system instead, which not only is considered the best for water conservation, but also prevents fungal disease and mildew on your plants.
Water Early in the Morning:
This is not only a great way to reduce evaporation caused by the heat of the day, but a great excuse to get outside in the morning and enjoy some fresh air.
Garden with Mulch:
Mulch is a gold star gardening material, and you can make it for free! Use leftover straw, leaves, and grass clippings to insulate your plants and retain moisture, reducing your need to continuously water.
