TIME TO MOVE TO A NEW HOME?

Whether you’re buying your first home, moving up to a larger house or downsizing to a smaller space, one of the first steps of your home search is to choose a neighbourhood you’ll love!

How do you decide which neighbourhood is the best fit for you & your family? This question is one that our team gets asked many times, so here are some of our tips to help you narrow down your neighbourhood choices.

What is the best area to live in Calgary?

Calgary’s four quadrants – Southwest, Southeast, Northwest & Northeast – and its neighbouring towns (Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane, DeWinton and Okotoks) each offer a unique blend of amenities, activities and residences.
Reflecting on these aspects can help decide which area is the ideal fit for you.

Your Place of Work

As this is likely where you spend a great deal of time, living in the same quadrant as your place of work could ensure a smoother commute every day.

Your Lifestyle

Do you like heading to the mountains on a regular basis? If so, opting for a home on Calgary’s West side, or a community in Cochrane would allow a quicker drive. By matching your priorities to the location of your home, it can make it easier to enjoy doing what you love most!

Your Family & Friends

If your wish is to stay or move closer to where your family and friends live, the area that they reside in may be a good starting point to begin your home search

How should I choose a Calgary neighbourhood?

When exploring a new neighbourhood, it’s a good idea to ask yourself which features you would like to see the most. Here are four key features to keep in mind as a starting point.

OUTDOOR SPACES

Spending more time outside will be easier if there are greenspaces, parks & pathways nearby for kids and adults alike to enjoy.

SCHOOLS

Plan ahead for your little ones by finding out if there are already schools in the community or future school sites being planned.

TRANSPORTATION

You’ll get an idea of how long it takes to travel from one destination to the other by knowing where the nearest major roadways or transit routes are.

AMENITIES

Whether it’s buying groceries or going out for dinner, it’s nice to know what’s in the area so you won’t have to venture too far away. Each Trico showhome will have a list of nearby amenities for you to see as well.

What are the suburbs of Calgary?

In recent years, more Calgarians have opted to move to newer, suburban neighbourhoods
where they can get more home at a greater value.

But do you have concerns about moving away from the city centre or an established neighbourhood?
Not to worry, we’re here to answer 4 frequently asked questions about life in Calgary’s suburbs.

Are Calgary’s downtown & established shopping centres far away?

While new communities are located closer to the outskirts of the city, Calgary’s numerous major roadways have made it much easier to travel around – and sometimes faster than inner-city roads because of less traffic lights! Plus, new communities often incorporate local and commercial shopping centres within the neighbourhood in the early phases, so important amenities are located within walking distance or a short drive away from home.

I’ve heard there’s a lot of construction in new Calgary communities?

Having said this, most communities are planned & built in phases – so once your phase is complete, construction will move to
another part of the neighbourhood where it’s less noticeable from your home.

Being one of the earlier residents comes with some pretty great perks – you’ll get first pick on homesites and exterior colour
choices on your new home, and prices are typically lower compared to later phases!

Why are the neighbours’ houses so close to mine?

Lots in new communities are typically structured differently (longer in length and thinner in width) compared to established communities, to provide more space at the front and rear of the home. Having a smaller sized lot also means you’ll be paying less for the land & less in property taxes down the road!!

Aside from price & location, what makes life in Calgary’s suburbs unique?

One of the best parts about suburban living is how close-knit the residents are. If you’re thinking of starting a family or wanting more space to grow in, chances are you’ll meet many like-minded people in the community, giving you the opportunity to make new friends (and have more space to entertain your old friends in your new home)!
