In 1982, my wife Eleanor and I moved to Canada, full of hope and enthusiasm for what the country could offer us. Here we have remained and thrived, Canadian citizens by choice, the best choice we ever made.
I feel enormously excited and grateful to be recognized by my adopted country for the Order of Canada, and more than a little surprised. I am thankful to live in a country that embraces a culture of multiculturalism and provides ample opportunities for everyone to become successful, no matter where they come from. It also provides me with a great sense of pride and reassurance that the work I’m doing is beneficial to society.
I love the motto of the Order of Canada, ‘They desire a better country (desiderantes meliorem patriam). -The spirit of these words is what I believe in and echoes my lifelong desire to do good in the communities I live and work in. Being recognized for my passion is truly humbling, and I would like to share this achievement with every other Canadian who is committed to making a difference.
I will be continuing my work in social entrepreneurship, and would like to encourage the younger generation to look at how they themselves can marry profit with not-for-profit in an innovative way to help make our society a better place for everyone.
